This place is awesome. The food is excellent and portions are more than adequate. I think that one thing most folks don't realize, is that when you're eating here, it's going to remind you more of eating a steak at home 40 years ago. The meat is still butchered old school, and it's cooked old school too. While this isn't the most popular method anymore, it's incredible none the less.
You should also definately save room for the Pies... Those rock. I usually get one of three things. A burger (I know, why? Try it, you'll understand), The Chicken Fried Steak, or a sirloin.
We enjoyed our two visits to this restaurant. You should try it! It's fun, like you're back in old Texas. I had a squash that was delicious--it was the biggest squash I'd ever seen in my life! If you say you're new to the restaurant, they give you a free bar of soap! It's handmade fragrant soap (not like you're getting a bar of Dial or something!) It's a fun outing and away from the city.
My wife and I went to the Ranchman Cafe when we first move here to TX in Sept'05 and just loved the steak and the baked potato (which you have to call and pre order) it was the best potato I'd ever had. We'll we haven't been back there again until last week (7 Sept 08) when we had a friend in from San Diego. He wanted steak and we thought of Ponder steak house. And everything was great, except the steak. We had very fresh salad with the best home made ranch dressing. We had great fried tomatoes and baked potatos was great again but none of likes our steak. My wife and I had the Rib Steak and my friend had the T-bone. It was like it was pan fried and no flavor. All three were very tough, could hardly cut or chew them. My frind hardly ate his. My wife took hers home and we recooked it on the grill. She wouldnt eat it with out A1 sausce, they had some wierd steak sauce and it was aweful. Mine was gone but it took lots of work. I actually felt bad we took our friend there for steak. I hope they get some better meat and stock up on A1. I still have to give them a very good because everything else tasted great.
AFTER SEEING THIS RESTURANT ON TV, I WAS GOING TO MAKE THE DRIVE FROM DALLAS FOR A STEAK DINNER. AFTER READING THE CURRENT REVIEW, AND THE RATING OF POOR I WILL PASS ON THIS DINNER IN PONDER. I'M SORRY THE TV PROGRAM WAS MISLEADING ON A GOOD STEAK DINNER....

I enjoy a good steak, I think anyone does. Had read an article in Texas Monthly, I believe. Had Perini's, Texas Road House, and Ranchman's out of about 100. I had eaten out at Perini's, tried the Texas Road House, this place was pretty close to where I lived so why not try it also. Service was good, plates are small which made the portions look large but they are adequate portions. Fries where good and well seasoned. My son's Chicken fingers where tender with a good breading. The gravy was also vary good, most of the time you can judge a place on their gravy and chicken fried steak. Now for the truth, you want a steak, do not go here. I had a 12oz t-bone, my wife had the rib steak. We both found our steaks watery, sinewy, and lacking flavour or bland. The pan/griddle frying of the steak was poor in appearance at best. My rating reflects the steaks only, of course its a steak house you should be able to prepare steaks equal in calibur to other steak houses. Desert was apple pie, was good but a bit to much cinnamon. In my opinion your better off going to Texas Road House, Hot Skillet, or even Cow Camp for a decent steak. Good Eating All
